Clarinet
The Clarinet is a woodwind instrument, which consists of a long pipe with a fluttering vibrating reed at the mouthpiece. The player blows into the clarinet in the right fashion and a beautiful sound is produced. This sound can be modified by changing the length of the pipe by opening or closing valves controlled by buttons on the side of the clarinet.
History of Instrument:
The clarinet is very descriptive of the age in which it was developed, through the 18th century and the Industrial Revolution, where steam piping and mechanical contraptions were beginning to enter the collective consciousness and the stylism of the drawings and machinations of Leonardo da Vinci began to work into the mind of the creative genius responsible for developing the clarinet. This mastermind of musical wisdom was Johann Denner. He altered the Clarinet's Predecessor, the Chalemeua, increasing its range and eventually altering the way in which the keys were placed to make playing it a simpler, more functional thing to do.
Famous Musician:
The clarinet has a significant place within Jazz and Classical music, being notably used by Nathan Haines, a London Based New Zealander with a penchant for bluesy jazz made for a rainy Sunday afternoon. Clarinet music is music from the soul, drifting gently and lazily out of the mind of the performer, nuancing its tender sound with a gentle caress. When viewing clarinet music in a live setting, the face of the player can become like the face of an angel, clear and serene, surrounded by a halo of radiance, a gift of music for their audience that somehow manages to settle even the most frenzied crowd into a well grounded room full of mellow spaces and happy faces.
Construction of Instrument:
The Clarinet can be made from a variety of timbers, which affect and alter the sound depending on the speed of sound within the wood. The basic construction and shape of the internal cavity is also quite significant to the final result of the musical performance. Inexpertly made instruments will render the music less magical, and even the skilled performer will struggle to make an inferior instrument sound good. Yamaha makes a good quality clarinet suitable for the beginner or the performer alike, but there are cheaper no name brands that should be avoided.
Clarinet creates mood:
Music, especially clarinet music, can be an elegant and romantic thing, and nothing but the best setting should be used for proper romancing. To explain this metaphor, by selecting the best tools for the task, the nicest clarinet obtainable, the music produced will be of a superior quality that aptly reflects and describes the mood of the individual playing the clarinet.
And on that note...
Clarinet Techniques:
Some clarinetists are sufficiently skilled that they can utilize circular breathing techniques, as employed with the didgeridoo, to extend the length of the note. Other techniques include overblowing, as most reeded instruments are capable of, to alter the fundamental pitch. This is usually what is occurring when someone is learning to play the clarinet, producing a caterwauling squeaking sound that is somewhat reminiscent of a chick house with a fox inside. By first mastering the proper way to blow and then mastering the squeaking of the instrument, avant-garde jazz can be produced with remarkable ease, and the clarinet is exposed to a new range of musical expression. Perhaps you will be the one to develop a new musical style with a clarinet.
